Change or cancel your sign-up

Plans change. You don't have to call the church office to get out of a slot, and you don't have to make an account to fix a typo. Here's what you can do yourself, and what happens when you do.

The short answer: Open the Change or cancel your sign-up link in your confirmation or reminder email. There you can change how many you're bringing or your note, or cancel outright. No account, no password — the link is yours alone. If you can't find the email, ask the church: they can change or remove you from their dashboard.

Find your link

The moment you sign up, SignUpChurch emails you a confirmation (subject “You're signed up: …”, or“You're on the list: …” for an RSVP). At the bottom is a line that reads Change or cancel your sign-up. The reminder email that arrives a couple of days before the event carries the same link.

Search your inbox for signupchurch or the name of the sheet if it's buried. The link works on any device, as many times as you need it.

If the sheet let you skip the email address and you did, there is no email and no link — ask the church to make the change for you.

What you can change yourself

The change page shows what you signed up for and lets you:

  • Change how many — bringing two dishes instead of three, or three people instead of two. You can go up as far as the spots still open on that slot.
  • Change your note — fix the spelling in a dedication, or say you're bringing chili after all. If the sheet shows notes on its public page, the page says so next to the box.
  • Cancel — one button, one confirmation.

Saving a change sends no email; your sign-up simply updates. Canceling sends you a short confirmation and lets the church know.

Answers to the church's questions (t-shirt size, allergies) aren't edited here, and signing up again would take a second spot. Ask the church to change an answer — they can edit your sign-up from their dashboard.

RSVPs, carpools, and plain forms

An RSVP (“Can you attend?”) or carpool question (“Need a ride or can you drive?”) works a little differently: go back to the sheet and answer again with the same email address. Your earlier answer is replaced, so a yes becomes a no and the church sees one answer from you, not two. The link in your email can also withdraw the answer entirely.

A plain form (a connect card, a prayer request) has nothing to edit in place: the link lets you remove your response, and sending a new one is how you change it.

What happens to your spot

When you cancel, the spot opens up right away. If the slot was full and someone joined its waitlist, the first person in line is offered your spot by email — one person at a time, so nobody has to race for it. The church hears about the cancellation too, so a dropped spot close to the event doesn't go unnoticed.

Canceling also means no more emails about that sign-up: no reminder, and no text if you'd asked for one.

When the church changes something

The church can move you to a different slot or remove you from its dashboard. Moving you sends you an email with the new details. Removing you usually does too — unless the church was cleaning up a duplicate it entered itself, in which case it can take the entry off quietly. Fixing a typo in your name or phone number on their side sends nothing.

Common questions

Do I need an account to change or cancel my sign-up?
No. Volunteers never have accounts on SignUpChurch. The link in your confirmation or reminder email is tied to your sign-up alone, and opening it is all the proof needed. Keep the email and you can change or cancel any time.
Can I switch to a different time or slot?
Not yet from the change page — cancel your current sign-up there, then go back to the sheet and sign up for the slot you want. Moving yourself to another open slot in one step is on our roadmap.
Does anyone find out when I cancel?
You get a short email confirming the cancellation, and the church is told a spot opened up (right away, or in its next daily or weekly roundup, depending on how it set up the sheet). If anyone was waiting for that slot, the first person in line is offered your spot by email.
I answered an RSVP or carpool question. How do I change my answer?
Go back to the sheet's page and answer again with the same email address. Your earlier answer is replaced, not duplicated — a yes becomes a no, a “need a ride” becomes “I can drive.” The link in your email can still cancel the answer outright.
The link says it's incomplete or expired. What now?
Open it from the original email rather than a forwarded or copied version, which can lose the end of the link. If it still doesn't work, reply to your confirmation email and ask the organizer — the church can change or remove your sign-up from its dashboard.
The event already happened or the deadline passed. Can I still cancel?
You can always cancel. Once a slot's date or sign-up deadline has passed, the change page only offers cancel — there's nothing left to edit. The link even works if the church has taken the sheet down.

Still stuck? The church that runs the sheet can always change or remove a sign-up for you. For a problem with SignUpChurch itself, contact support and a real human will reply.
