a tidy dashboard

Folders and a grid view for your sheets

This one came from a screenshot. A church sent us their dashboard: an 8:15 traditional service, an 11:00 traditional service (and a copy of it), a fourth-quarter rota, a meal train for the pastor, and the Messiah volunteers — all in one tall list. “Maybe these should be tiles on a grid,” they wrote, “and could I put them in folders?” Yes and yes.

The short version: Your dashboard now has folders — put sheets under headings you name, from a Folder menu on every card — and a List / Grid switch that shows sheets as tiles two or three across. Both sit beside the sort menu that landed last week, both are remembered per browser, and both are on every plan.

Folders

Click + New folder in the dashboard toolbar, name it, and it shows up as a heading. Then use the new Folder menu on any sheet card (it's next to Duplicate and Archive, and at the top of the sheet's own page) to file the sheet under it. Or skip the first step: pick New folder… right from that menu and the folder is created with the sheet already inside.

Folders list A–Z, each with its sheet count, and anything you haven't filed sits under Not in a folder at the end. Rename and Delete folder live beside each heading. Sheets inside a folder follow the sort you've picked, so the next Sunday is still on top of each one.

What a folder is not: it isn't a setting on the sheet. The link, the QR code, the embed, the plan limit, the ChMS sync — none of it changes, and volunteers never see a folder name. It's a shelf label, nothing more.

Grid view

Next to Sort by there's now a List / Grid switch. Grid shows the same cards as tiles — two across on a laptop, three on a wide monitor — with the Live / Draft badge up top and the actions along the bottom edge so they line up across the row. Twenty sheets fit on one screen instead of three. Phones stay one across, because a tile the width of a thumb isn't a tile. The dashboard remembers your pick in that browser, the way it already remembers your sort order.

The details we sweated

  • Deleting a folder deletes nothing else. Its sheets go back to the main list, sign-ups and all. We ask once, and the confirm button says exactly what happens.
  • Copies stay put. Duplicate a sheet and the copy lands in the same folder. A recurring sheet's next occurrence stays in its folder week after week — nobody has to re-file the Sunday greeters every Monday.
  • The archive stays one list. Archived sheets keep their folder, but the Archived section at the bottom doesn't split into headings — it's a drawer, not a shelf. Restore a sheet and it reappears under its folder.
  • No duplicate names, even by case — you can't end up with both “Youth” and “youth” and a sheet in each.
  • Search ignores folders on purpose. Type a title, a slot, or a volunteer's email and you get one list of results, each with its Folder menu, so you can tidy as you go.
The step-by-step, with the questions we expect, is in the help center: Organize your dashboard.
